Her son confronted me angrily, and her daughter called to accuse me of being ungrateful, saying I was heartless. I recorded everything they said and played it back for my mother-in-law. She fell silent after hearing it. Because she knew better than anyone. Back when I was recovering after giving birth, during the time I was supposed to be cared for and well-fed, she made me eat nothing but instant noodles for a whole month.
