Ronan Kane, New York mafia don, bears a deadly curse: death takes his first wife and eldest son. To save his "benefactor" Cora, he forcibly marries commoner Evelyn, makes her pregnant, and snuffs out three candles symbolizing her life — watching her countdown begin. Not until Evelyn "dies" does he learn the truth: she was his real savior, not Cora. The woman he sacrificed. The woman he loved. Six years later, she returns with a fiancé. She no longer needs him. Now he drowns in regret and pays for every sin he committed against her.
